We just designed our business card and will be sending it to the printer tomorrow. It will probably take some time before we have the cards ready since they have to die-cut it into a circle shape! (Honestly, this is the first time I feel excited giving out my business card ).
The circle represents our brand “0 – Zero” and also the shape of the wrist watch. It’s length is just the same as normal business cards, so you won’t have trouble keeping it inside your wallet. Other than that, just rotate the card until you check Robert inside-out (please don’t spam his inbox!)

There is an app coming, yeah! Yesterday I finally had time to finish the required images and sent them to my man Robin, who will create the app. He also came up with the good idea of adding different time zones. These are some mock-ups of how it will roughly look like. The iPad theoretically could display a real timezone-orgy with 12 at once, due to its’ bigger screen.. well, it’s like my friend Daniel said: “times has never been that sexy”.
Oh, and one important thing i’d like to mention: Due to technical reasons in production, we have to switch the order of the hands. Now the outer ring shows hours, and the inner ring minutes. if there are seconds (in the app for example), they are indicated by the innermost circle.

In cooperation with our watch development company, we have teamed up and opened our first office in Hong Kong for the production of ZERO Watches

This is just a 3D accident! I was doing some renderings for providing the measurements to the factory. But this looks quite awesome.. well, not the color combination, but the pattern. i was thinking: perhaps we could make some printed versions in the future with different colors?

At the moment we are facing 2 main challenges: Firstly, the time setting. To be able to make a watch without buttons, I had initial ideas of a radio controlled watch. I thought that would be possible and not too expensive, because there are so many cheap radio controlled watches and alarm clocks out there.. and made the first concept without dealing with technical issues too much (i’m not a professional industrial designer!! . Well.. technically this would be possible, but there are other issues with radio controlled watches. The time signal provided from terrestrial antennas does not offer global network coverage, but mainly central europe, some parts of asia, like japan, and northern america. There are also other issues, but this alone is a killer argument against it. Receiving GPS time signal seems to be uncommon with wrist watches, and is also much more expensive. Concerning this problem, we are thinking of using a hidden crown on the back, which will hopefully be possible (dealing with that right now).
The second challenge is the strap. If the strap is made of soft rubber, it won’t be ensured that it will stick to the bendable metal part without slipping out. If the strap is made of hard plastic, it won’t be possible to adjust the size in any way, and producing many sizes is difficult with a limited quantity of watches. But we are doing all we can to avoid a common strap, because we think that this bracelet-style strap is one of the key features, making the watch unique. We’re racking our brains to find out how this could be achieved and really be done by the factory who is producing the watches. My latest idea would be a removable clock body (through the back of the hard plastic part). We would have a cuff with different colours and 2-3 different sizes, and a universal clock body with different colours. This way you could put a red clock body into a blue cuff for example. One question remains: is it economical to produce that many different plastic cuffs ??
By the way, I found this cuff on my girlfriend’s wrist. It fits perfectly, and i could very well imagine wearing such a watch..

It has been a couple of months since we posted our first concept of ZERO wrist watch online at Vimeo and subsequently being featured on Yanko Design, Engadget, Behance and many other blog sites. Since then, we have received tremendous interest and positive feedback from people around the globe, as well as magazines inquiring to feature our watch on their product and design section. The good news to everyone is that we are indeed turning our concept into production with the help of a watch manufacturing company in Hong Kong. Being watch fanatics ourselves, we are nervously excited about this project!
